Dhikala FRH

Renowned for its panoramic landscape, Dhikala is located on the edge of the Patli Dun valley, along the Ramganga with the Kanda ridge as a backdrop. Monumental building of the old FRH built in the 1890s. Although it was one of the first accommodation facilities to be built in the park, staff did not live there during the monsoons until 1963 as it was heavily infested with malaria. The ground floor served as the DFO office and the upper floor as accommodation for forest guards. It has the unique advantage of being the launch site for “Project Tiger”. Subsequently, after 1975, Dhikala was formally opened and accommodation increased due to the sudden increase in tourism. In addition to the old FRH building, several other types of accommodation have also been added. The complex is a complete entity in itself, with restaurants, nature guides, jeep safaris, a well-stocked library, evening movie shows and walking trails. A post office is available to share park experiences with letters. The watchtowers located nearby provide an excellent view of the entire Ramganga riverbed and the magnificent chauras.

Attractions

Canter Safari

Canter Safari in Corbett is the best option for those who live outside the Dhikala zone and want to see the wildlife of the area. Canter is a 16 seater open air bus that runs from Ramnagar to Dhikala and then back to Ramnagar. It is also necessary to book in advance on the official website for the canter safari.

Chaurs (Grass plots)

Dhikala is known for its vast grasslands that are full of elephants, spotted deer, wild boars and pigs. Visitors can often spot a wild tiger crossing pastures or chasing a deer.

Watch tower

The watch tower located at Dhikala is perfectly located and allows you to get an excellent view of the wild animals that are drawn to the nearby chaurs for grazing, it also gives you an excellent view of the entire ramganga riverbed and also a large part of the Dhikala chaurs.

This watchtower is located a 10-minute walk from the Dhikala forest rest stop. About fifty yards south of the watch tower is a man-made watering hole, making it an ideal spot to spot deer, elephants, wild boar and the occasional tiger.

Crocodile Point in Gairal

The crocodile pool is located on the shortcut from Gairal to the other rest houses west of it. It is also a natural structure resembling a balcony that overlooks a pool that is almost permanently inhabited by crocodiles.

Sambar Trail

This jungle trail stretches from the base of the Dhikala Watchtower to the Khinanauli rest stop. This area probably has the maximum tiger sightings in the area. This is due to its ideal location between the hills on one side and the river bed on the other. Most of the animals in this area pass down for water when moving. Elephants are also frequent visitors to this track and it is important to be able to reverse your vehicle as easily as you can forward if you plan to drive down this way just before sunset in the summer months. A pair of Serpant Eagles also had their nest high up in a tree next to this runway. If patience is one of your strengths, this track is almost guaranteed not to send you back disappointed.

Several species of deer can be seen in the zone, including spotted deer and others like Para (Axis pornicus), Sambar (Cervus unicolor), Kakkar (Muntiacus muntjak) which is also called barking deer because of the hoarse sound it makes. reminiscent of a dog barking.

It is one of the best places on earth to see tigers and wild elephants.

The area is also a birdwatcher’s dream destination. The surrounding forests and large body of water support a wide variety of birds in the area.

The chances of spotting a sloth are very high in this part of the forest. They are attracted to both termites and the sweet nectar of Mahua flowers. Bears have been recorded in a drunken state as Mahua ferments in their digestive system.
